DO THESE STEPS FIRST...

Roof drain installation using superior garde roof drain pans

Step 1: Measure the distance between your roof joists.

  • For joists that are 16" on center you must 14" of clear space between them.
  • For joists that are 24" on center you must 22" of clear space between them.
  • If you have a concrete or metal roof, you probably have joists much further apart.

Step 2: Measure the distance between the roof and the ceiling.

  • This dimension is important as it determines which roof drain will fit the space.
  • If there is no ceiling and is an open space as in a warehouse application, that's fine, make a note of it.
  • If you do not have access to this space, you will either have to create an opening or use your best guess.

Step 3: Decide on a single or double roof drain

  • Use this simple rule: If you have no overflow roof drains, you should add them. This means using combination roof drains. (double roof drains) This includes the primary and overflow roof drains.
  • Using a combination roof drain is not the only way to add an overflow roof drain. Some roofs have a through -wall overflow drain that is sheet metal and is referred to as a "scupper". These are generally acceptable. Always follow your local building codes.
  • If you have scuppers, a single roof drain will generally be acceptable.

NOW SELECT YOUR SUMP PANS AND ROOF DRAINS...

Use model SSP roof drain pan if...

  • Your roof drain installation requires a single 8-1/2" primary roof drain
  • If you have 14" of clear space between the joists
  • If you have at least 13" below the roof, use the bottom outlet roof drain.

 OR:

  • If you have minimum space, at least 8" below the roof, use the side outlet roof drain.
